FABLE

The Whisper Of Hope

The SUV Hit Them Both Before They Could Ever Marry

Two days passed slowly inside the quiet hospital ward. Liam refused to stay in his own room any longer. He sat in a metal wheelchair beside Maya's bed.

Maya lay completely still under the white cotton blankets. Tubes connected her fragile body to surrounding medical monitors. The rhythmic sound of the breathing machine filled the room.

Liam: Wake up, sweet girl. I am right here.

Thomas: She can still hear you, Liam. Keep talking.

Liam: Remember our favorite quiet spot by the lake?

Maya's chest rose and fell with mechanical consistency. Liam reached out and took her soft, pale hand carefully. Her fingers felt cold against his warm, bandaged palm.

Liam: You promised we would plan our beach wedding.

Sarah: She is fighting hard to come back, son.

Liam: I brought something special for you today, Maya.

Liam opened the tiny velvet box resting on his lap. The brilliant diamond ring sparkled under the soft room light. Thomas wiped away a fresh tear from his tired cheek.

Thomas: Put it on her finger, my boy.

Liam: Is that really okay with you, Thomas?

Thomas: You are already my family, Liam. Do it.

Liam carefully slipped the shining ring onto Maya's finger. It fit her small hand perfectly, glowing against skin. He leaned forward and kissed her cool, quiet forehead gently.

Liam: I will wait for you forever, my love.

Suddenly, the heart monitor began to beep a little faster. A faint ripple moved across Maya's closed eyelids slowly. Thomas leaned forward over the bed with wide, hopeful eyes.

Thomas: Doctor! Come in here right now!

Sarah: Did you see her eyelids move just now?

Liam: Maya! Can you hear my voice, baby?

Doctor Vance walked quickly into the quiet hospital room. He checked the digital displays on the medical equipment right away. Maya's breathing shifted away from the machine's strict rhythm.

Doctor Vance: Her brain activity is increasing rapidly now.

Liam: Squeeze my hand if you hear me, Maya!

A tiny movement twitched in Maya's left hand fingers. She squeezed Liam's knuckles with surprising, gentle physical strength. Everyone inside the room gasped in total shock and joy.

Maya: Li... am...

Liam: I am right here, sweet girl! Don't move!

Maya: The... ring... is so pretty...

Thomas: Oh my sweet darling daughter! You came back!

Tears of pure happiness streamed down Liam's pale cheeks. Maya opened her eyes slowly and looked directly at him. The long dark nightmare was finally beginning to end now.

Doctor Vance: This is nothing short of a true miracle.

Maya: Did we... beat that speeding grey car?

Liam: We beat everything together, my sweet wife-to-be.
