The classroom fell deathly quiet except for the soft sniffles of little Toby resting his head on his father's shoulder. Principal Vance swallowed hard, looking toward Mrs. Gable, whose face had turned entirely white.
Principal Vance: Mrs. Gable... is this true? Did you hit the boy?
Mrs. Gable: He... he was disruptive, Mr. Vance! The administration promised us we could maintain order!
Mark: You hit him because he couldn't draw a star! You're a sick, abusive coward!
Within ten minutes, the sound of wailing sirens filled the street outside. Two Dallas Police Department cruisers pulled up to the front doors, their red and blue lights flashing against the windows of the classroom.
Two officers, Officer Ramirez and Officer Chen, walked briskly into the classroom with their hands resting on their utility belts.
Officer Ramirez: We received a 911 call reporting an assault on school grounds. Who is the administrator here?
Principal Vance: I am, Officer. This man forced his way into our building and physically assaulted a senior faculty member!
Mark: I slapped a woman who was actively abusing my four-year-old child! Look at his hand, Officer!
Officer Chen walked over to Mark, kneeling down next to Toby. She gently took the boy's tiny wrist, her eyes narrowing as she examined the deep welt across his skin.
Officer Chen: That's a fresh impact injury. Did someone hit him with an object?
Mark: She used a wooden ruler from her desk. And I have the entire live footage saved directly to my cloud server right here on my phone.
Mark pulled out his phone and pressed play on the recorded clip. The high-definition video clearly showed Mrs. Gable grabbing the ruler, shouting at the child, and striking him with full force while Toby sat helpless in his chair.
Officer Ramirez: Put your hands behind your back, ma'am.
Mrs. Gable: What?! You can't arrest me! I have been teaching at this academy for twelve years!
Officer Ramirez: You are under arrest for felony child abuse and injury to a child under fourteen. Hands behind your back now!
Officer Ramirez pulled Mrs. Gable's arms behind her back, snapping the metal handcuffs around her wrists. The woman began to cry, but no one in the room offered her a shred of sympathy. The other children watched in silence as their feared teacher was led away in handcuffs.
Principal Vance: Officer, surely we can handle this internally... this school has an immaculate reputation...
Mark: Your reputation is dead, Vance. Because tomorrow, every parent in this state is going to see what happens behind these doors.
