The fluorescent lights of the corporate office hummed softly, but Mark couldn't focus on the spreadsheet sitting on his dual monitors. His phone rested against his coffee mug, displaying a live feed from the new security application he had installed just that morning.
Mark: Just checking in to see if he's settling in okay.
He whispered to himself in the empty conference room. His four-year-old son, Toby, had started at the prestigious Dallas academy only three days ago. Mark tapped the screen, expanding the video feed from the classroom corner camera.
On the screen, little Toby sat at a small wooden desk near the wall. A framed American flag hung directly behind him. The boy was fidgeting with a red crayon, his small fingers wobbling as he tried to draw a simple star on construction paper.
Mark: Come on, buddy. You got this.
Mark smiled softly, feeling the familiar warmth of a father's pride. But then, the classroom teacher, Mrs. Gable, stepped into the frame. Her shadow fell heavily over Toby's desk. Her mouth moved rapidly, though the audio was slightly muffled through the feed.
Mrs. Gable: Stop fidgeting right now!
Toby shrank back, pulling his tiny shoulders toward his ears. He dropped the crayon. Mark leaned closer to his phone screen, his pulse suddenly quickening as he saw Mrs. Gable reach into her desk drawer and pull out a thick wooden ruler.
Mark: What is she doing?
His voice cracked in the quiet room. Before Mark could fully process the sight, Mrs. Gable raised the wooden stick high and brought it down hard onto Toby's tiny hand. A sharp slap echoed through the speaker. Toby recoiled instantly, clutching his bright red hand to his chest, tears bursting from his eyes as he began to sob hysterically.
Mark: WHAT IS SHE DOING?!
Mark slammed his hands onto the desk, knocking his cold coffee onto the floor. His heart pounded like a jackhammer against his ribs as he watched his four-year-old child weep in agony on the live monitor. Without grabbing his coat or locking his computer, Mark bolted out of the office door, his mind completely ablaze with pure rage.
