Six months later, the doors to the Dallas County Courthouse swung open as the high-profile trial came to a dramatic close. The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity with journalists, reporters, and dozens of concerned parents.
Inside the courtroom, the judge struck his gavel hard against the wooden bench.
Judge Ellison: In the matter of the State versus Margaret Gable, on the count of felony child abuse, the jury finds the defendant guilty. You are hereby sentenced to six years in state prison without the possibility of early parole.
Mrs. Gable sobbed softly, covering her face as the bailiffs put her in iron shackles and led her out of the courtroom to begin serving her term.
Judge Ellison: Furthermore, regarding the civil action against the academy, the court approves the settlement of thirty-five million dollars, along with the immediate revocation of the school's operating license. Principal Vance is hereby ordered to surrender his administrative credentials permanently.
Principal Vance sat with his head bowed in shame, his career, reputation, and livelihood entirely ruined.
Outside on the courthouse steps, dozens of news cameras flashed as Mark stepped up to the podium, holding little Toby tightly in his arms. The four-year-old boy looked happy, healthy, and completely healed, holding a bright new drawing of a gold star in his little hand.
Reporter: Mr. Miller! How do you feel about the verdict today?
Mark: Justice was served today. Not just for my son Toby, but for every child whose voice was ignored by people in power.
Reporter: Do you have any regrets about what you did when you walked into that classroom?
Mark: A father's first job is to protect his child. I would cross through fire to keep my son safe, and I will never apologize for protecting my boy.
Toby looked up at his father, wrapping his small arms around Mark's neck with a huge, bright smile.
Toby: I love you, Daddy.
Mark: I love you too, buddy. You're safe now. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.
