The dark hallway felt cold and endless as twelve-year-old Liam bolted past the antique mirror, his sneakers squeaking against the hardwood floor. His little sister, Maya, was cowering against the peeling floral wallpaper at the far end, her shoulders trembling uncontrollably.
Liam: DON'T TOUCH HER!
He threw himself between his terrified five-year-old sister and the looming shadow of their stepmother, Evelyn. The grand house, once filled with laughter before their mother’s sudden disappearance three years ago, had become a prison ever since their father was called away for an extended business trial abroad.
Evelyn: You little brat. You think you can talk to me like that in my own house?
Evelyn’s sharp nails dug deep into Liam’s cheeks, pinning his chin in a vise-like grip. Her eyes burned with a cold, terrifying rage that made the young boy’s blood run cold.
Evelyn: YOU'LL BE BURIED BESIDE HER!
Liam gasped for air, his vision blurring as he struggled against her suffocating grasp. Maya’s quiet weeping filled the heavy silence of the corridor, her tiny hand pointing toward a jagged gap in the wall behind them. Just as Evelyn raised her free hand to strike, the front door crashed open with a deafening boom.
Heavy footsteps echoed rapidly down the corridor. Police officers swarmed the entry hall, their flashlights cutting through the dimness. Behind them stood David, their father, his suit rumpled and his face pale with horror.
David: NOBODY TOUCHES MY CHILD!
David rushed forward, slamming his weight into Evelyn and knocking her away from Liam. She stumbled against the banister, gasping as officers immediately moved in to restrain her wrists in steel handcuffs.
Liam: Dad! You came back!
David: I got your text, son. I brought help. Are you two alright?
Maya: DAD, MOMMY IS INSIDE THAT WALL!
The room froze as Maya’s tearful voice echoed through the hallway, her small finger pointed directly at the dark hole beneath the broken floral wallpaper.
