FABLE

The Secret Behind the Plaster

Dad Came Home With Police Just In Time To Save Us

Officer Miller: Get an ambulance here, NOW! Code red!

The narrow chamber hidden inside the double-wall structure was bare, save for a thin mattress on the concrete subfloor. Slumped against the far corner was a frail, pale woman whose eyes blinked painfully against the sudden glare of flashlight beams.

Sarah: D... David?

David: Sarah! Oh my God, Sarah!

David threw his weight against the remaining plaster, tearing away large sections of drywall with his bare hands until the opening was wide enough to crawl through.

Evelyn: Stop him! He’s contaminating a crime scene!

Officer Jackson: Sit down and shut up! You're under arrest for kidnapping, false imprisonment, and attempted murder!

Sarah: David... my babies... are they safe?

David: They’re right here, sweetheart. They’re right here with me.

David lifted his wife’s frail body out of the dark enclosure. She was impossibly thin, wearing the same clothes she had worn the night she mysteriously vanished three years ago.

Liam: Mom! Mom, you're alive!

Maya: Mommy! I told them you were in the wall!

Sarah: Maya... my smart girl... you heard me tapping...

Paramedics rushed through the front entrance with a stretcher, pushing past the stunned police force to attend to Sarah. Officer Miller grabbed Evelyn by the arm, securing second cuffs around her wrists.

Officer Miller: You kept a human being trapped inside a wall cavity for three years?

Evelyn: She took everything that was supposed to be mine! The estate, the bank accounts, David’s love!

David: You twisted monster... you were my wife’s cousin! We trusted you!

Evelyn: You trusted me enough to let me manage the family trust funds while she was 'missing'! I was entitled to that money!

Sarah gasped for air as the oxygen mask was placed over her face, her trembling fingers pointing weakly toward Evelyn’s coat pocket.

Sarah: The... key... the hidden ledger...

Officer Miller: What ledger, ma'am?

Sarah: She... she forced me to sign... transfer papers... every month...

David looked at Evelyn with pure rage in his eyes. The divorce papers and disappearance reports he had spent years agonizing over were all part of an elaborate criminal scheme.

David: You forged her signature and hid her right under our noses...

Evelyn: You’ll never prove it in court! I have the best defense lawyers money can buy!

Officer Miller: You won't be needing a defense lawyer, lady. You'll be needing a miracle.
