David: I'm coming with you in the ambulance. Liam, Maya, get your coats. We're not staying in this house another second tonight.
Liam: Dad, what about the safe in the study?
David: Officer Miller, can you secure the study until the detective squad arrives?
Officer Miller: Absolutely, Mr. Miller. We're locking down the entire perimeter as a primary crime scene. Nobody enters without my authorization.
An hour later, at the city memorial hospital, doctors were running emergency fluids and tests on Sarah. David sat by her bedside, holding her frail hand tightly while Liam and Maya slept on the small couch in the corner of the private room.
Dr. Reynolds: Mr. Miller? A word outside, please.
David gently let go of Sarah’s hand and stepped into the quiet hospital hallway with the attending physician.
David: How is she, Doctor? Tell me the truth.
Dr. Reynolds: She’s severely malnourished and suffering from extreme vitamin D deficiency, but miraculously, she has no permanent organ damage. The sedatives in her system were low-grade, meant to keep her weak, not to kill her.
David: Why would Evelyn keep her alive for three years? Why not just... end it?
Dr. Reynolds: Because of the trust fund stipulations. We checked her medical records. The trust established by Sarah's late father required her biometric thumbprint and annual verbal verification for major capital withdrawals.
David leaned against the hallway wall, rubbing his face with both hands as the horrifying reality settled over him.
David: Every time Evelyn claimed Sarah sent a signed legal letter from overseas... she was forcing Sarah to sign it in that hidden room.
Dr. Reynolds: Precisely. She needed her victim alive to siphon the wealth away bit by bit without triggering a homicide investigation.
Detective Vance, lead investigator on the cold case, walked down the corridor toward David with a thick folder in his hand.
Detective Vance: Mr. Miller. We just executed a search warrant on the study and Evelyn’s private vehicle at your residence.
David: What did you find, Detective?
Detective Vance: Two passports under fake names, one way tickets to a country with no extradition treaty, and four million dollars in bearer bonds ready for transfer. She was forty-eight hours away from disappearing forever.
David: Is it enough to keep her locked away for life?
Detective Vance: Mr. Miller, between the physical evidence in the wall, the recorded journal entries, and your wife's testimony, she will be facing federal kidnapping, grand larceny, and attempted murder charges. She will spend the rest of her life behind bars.
