The afternoon sun beat down relentlessly over the manicured lawns of the Dallas suburb, casting sharp shadows across the crystal-clear water of the estate's swimming pool. Clara pushed her cleaning cart along the stone patio, her eyes fixed on the shimmering surface.
Clara: Just need to finish scrubbing the tile borders before Mr. Sterling gets back from the firm.
She adjusted her uniform apron, wiping sweat from her forehead. A few feet away, Victoria sat lounge-side, her diamond ring catching the harsh sunlight as she lazily tapped on her phone. Beside her, little Lily played with a plastic rubber duck at the shallow edge of the water.
Victoria: Clara, stop clattering those brushes. You are disrupting my peaceful afternoon.
Clara: Apologies, Mrs. Sterling. I am almost done with the deep clean around the shallow steps.
Victoria: Make it faster. And take Lily inside soon. Her constant babbling is giving me a headache.
Clara nodded softly, keeping her head down, but her gaze lingered on two-year-old Lily. The toddler was reaching out toward the deeper section where a bright red floating ball drifted just beyond her tiny fingers.
Clara: Sweetheart, sit back. Stay away from the edge, okay?
Victoria: Stop coddling her, Clara. She needs to learn independence. She is fine.
Victoria stood up, stepping closer to the water. Her expression hardened as she looked down at the helpless child. Without warning, Victoria reached out and grabbed Lily by her small shoulder, lowering the toddler straight into the deep water.
Lily: Mommy! No! Cold!
Victoria: Hush! You need to stop making so much noise!
Clara’s heart stopped as she saw the baby girl submerged, her tiny pink dress floating up while bubbles rose rapidly to the surface. Victoria was holding her down, her face completely cold and unbothered.
Clara: Oh God! What are you doing?!
Clara dropped her scrub brush and charged forward across the wet pool deck, her sneakers skidding against the slick stone tiles as she prepared to intervene.
