The bright morning sun was shining down on the bustling farmers market in town.
Vendors were shouting out prices for fresh produce, pastries, and homemade fruit jams.
Sarah pulled her lightweight cardigan tightly around her shoulders as she walked near a popular bakery table.
Her husband Mark walked right behind her, carrying two light grocery bags in his hands.
Sarah: I cannot believe you brought up our financial problems in front of the cashier.
Mark: I was just asking if we could get a discount on the bread.
Sarah: You're embarrassing me in front of everyone!
Mark: Nobody was paying attention to us, Sarah. You are overreacting as usual.
Sarah: Everyone turned around and looked right at us when you complained about the mortgage.
Mark: Because the mortgage rate went up this month, and money is tight right now!
Sarah: That does not mean you discuss our family trust fund and debts in public.
Mark let out a loud sigh and rolled his eyes at his angry wife.
Mark: You always care more about appearances than actual reality, don't you?
Sarah: I care about basic dignity, Mark, which you seem to completely lack today.
Before Mark could reply, two older voices spoke up firmly from behind the pastry stall.
Mark's parents, Arthur and Evelyn, stepped out into the open walkway with stern expressions on their faces.
Arthur: Why are you two causing a scene in public?
Evelyn: People are staring at both of you. It is completely unacceptable behavior.
Sarah: Evelyn, Mark started complaining to strangers about our living costs and private bank affairs.
Mark: I was just talking, Mom. Sarah is the one shouting at me.
Arthur: We are not going to air family laundry here in the middle of town.
Evelyn: Both of you get into the car right now. We are going straight home.
Sarah crossed her arms tightly and glared at Mark as they walked toward the parking lot.
Mark muttered under his breath, feeling completely humiliated by his parents taking Sarah's side.
The car ride back to the suburban house was filled with an icy, uncomfortable silence.
Nobody said a single word until Arthur pulled the sedan into the long concrete driveway.
They all stepped out and walked toward the large front door without looking at each other.
Sarah's heart was beating fast, knowing that a massive confrontation was about to happen indoors.
She opened the heavy wooden door and walked straight into the bright, sunny living room area.
The room featured shiny hardwood oak floors, crisp white crown molding, and an framed flag on the wall.
Arthur closed the front door behind them with a heavy thud that echoed in the hallway.
Arthur: Come home right now and sit down. We need to talk like adults.
