The bright daylight flooded through the high glass windows of the formal living room.
Arthur and Evelyn stood firmly on the polished oak floor, looking sternly at the younger couple.
Mark set the grocery bags down on a side table with far too much force.
Mark: We are adults, Dad. You don't need to order us around like children.
Evelyn: If you act like unruly children in public, we will treat you like children.
Evelyn turned sharply toward her husband and raised her voice with deep irritation in her eyes.
Evelyn: Show some respect outside in front of strangers!
Arthur: I agree completely. Our family reputation in this town actually means something.
Sarah: Tell that to your son. He was ready to tell the baker our complete credit history.
Mark: Stop lying! I mentioned one small detail about our mortgage payment date!
Sarah: You brought up my mother's estate papers and the pending inheritance lawsuit too!
Mark turned his head fast, his face flushing dark red with sudden, intense anger.
Mark: Because that inheritance money was supposed to pay off this house three months ago!
Sarah: The probate court is still reviewing the estate documents, Mark! I cannot speed up judges!
Mark: Your sister is stalling the settlement because she knows you signed a prenup with me!
Evelyn: Mark! Do not bring legal disputes into a simple family conversation right now.
Mark: No, Mom! I am tired of keeping quiet while she hides behind her lawyers!
Sarah took a step closer to Mark, her hands trembling with rage and frustration.
Sarah: I am not hiding anything from you or anyone else in this house!
Mark: This is all your fault! You ruin everything today!
Sarah: Don't you blame me! You started it!
Sarah shoved Mark's chest firmly with both hands to push him away from her space.
Mark stumbled backward slightly, knocking against a small wooden side table standing nearby.
A heavy glass cup sitting on the edge wobbled briefly before tipping over the side.
It hit the polished hardwood oak floor with a sharp, echoing crash that shattered glass everywhere.
Dark red juice spilled across the smooth wooden planks, spreading quickly near their shoes.
Sarah gasped loudly and took a quick step back away from the broken glass shards.
Her face suddenly turned pale, and her eyes rolled backward toward the bright ceiling lights.
Before anyone could reach out to catch her, Sarah dropped limply onto the floorboards.
She lay motionless right next to the dark red spill, her eyes closed completely tight.
