The quiet afternoon inside the suburban home was broken only by the faint, rhythmically steady tapping sound echoing down the carpeted hallway. Ryan stood near the kitchen doorway, holding two mug handles in one hand while listening intently to the unusual noise. His four-year-old toddler, Lily, was on her knees near the baseboard, kneeling quietly in her bright pink pajamas.
Ryan: Lily, sweetie, what are you doing down there on the floor?
Lily: I'm giving her the food, Daddy. She said she gets hungry when it gets dark outside.
Ryan: Who gets hungry? Honey, there is nobody living inside our house walls.
Lily: The girl in the wall. She likes peanut butter sandwiches the most.
Ryan: Lily, that is just an air vent. Stop pushing your lunch through those metal slats right now.
Ryan walked closer, his brows furrowing as he noticed a small paper plate sitting empty on the carpet next to her. He crouched down beside his daughter, looking directly into the dark opening of the wall return vent. Down through the narrow gaps of the metal grate, he expected to see nothing more than dust and old house wires, but a subtle movement caught his eye.
Lily: See? She took the whole sandwich, Daddy. She told me her hands were very cold today.
Ryan: Wait a minute... there's something actually moving down in there.
Lily: She said her name is Sarah, but Mommy told me never to talk to her.
Ryan: What did you just say? Your mother told you about someone in the wall?
Inside the dark vent gap, a tiny, soot-covered hand reached up from the darkness, its thin fingers snatching the crust of the bread off the metal shelf before disappearing back into the shadowy recess. Ryan froze, his heart slamming against his ribs as a cold chill ran down his entire spine.
Ryan: Oh God... who is in there?!
