The heavy iron gates of the estate swung open as two police cruisers pulled up the long brick driveway, their red and blue lights flashing against the manicured lawn. Heavy footsteps echoed as four officers rushed around the side of the villa toward the pool area.
Officer Davis: Police! Hands where we can see them! Is everyone alright here?
Mark: Over here, officer. My daughter is safe, but this woman just attempted to drown her and tried to commit wire fraud on her account.
Evelyn: Officer, don't listen to him! He attacked me! Look at my face! He slapped me!
Officer Davis: Ma'am, stay right where you are. Don't move.
Evelyn: He’s lying! He’s trying to frame me so he doesn't have to pay me in our divorce!
Officer Davis: Ma'am, we received the dispatch call. We heard the entire audio recording live from Mr. Vance's open line. We heard you threatening the child's life.
Evelyn: That... that isn't admissible! I didn't consent to being recorded!
Officer Davis: In the state of Texas, one-party consent applies to phone calls, and high-risk child endangerment gives us full authority to act immediately. Cuff her, Miller.
Evelyn: Get your hands off me! Do you know who my father is? You can't touch me!
The second officer grabbed Evelyn’s arms, pulling them behind her back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.
Evelyn: Mark! Tell them to stop! You can't do this to me!
Mark: I told you, Evelyn. You touch my daughter, you deal with me. And now you deal with the law.
Officer Davis: Mr. Vance, we need you to bring the child inside so paramedics can check her wrists for soft tissue damage. We also need the security footage transferred to our department drive.
Mark: The footage is already uploading to your precinct’s secure server. I emailed it to your chief five minutes ago.
Evelyn: You monster! You ruined my life!
Mark: You ruined your own life the second you thought money was more valuable than a child's safety.
As the officers pulled the screaming woman away toward the waiting police cruiser, Mark turned his back on her, focusing entirely on the shivering girl in his arms.
Lily: Is the mean lady gone forever, Daddy?
Mark: She's gone, sweetie. She's never, ever coming back into this house again.
Lily: Promise?
Mark: I promise on Mommy’s memory. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.
