Two weeks later, the afternoon sun cast a warm, golden glow over the estate pool. The water was still and calm, reflecting the clear Texas sky. The wicker chairs where Evelyn had sat had been thrown out, replaced by bright yellow lounge chairs filled with colorful stuffed animals and children’s toys.
Mark: You ready to try again today, Lily?
Lily stood at the shallow end of the steps, wearing bright pink arm floaties and looking at the water with a tiny hint of hesitation.
Lily: Will you hold my hand the whole time, Daddy?
Mark: I won't let go for a single second. I promise.
Mark stepped into the warm water first, holding out his arms. Lily took a deep breath, stepped off the bottom concrete stair, and splashed right into his chest, giggling as he caught her and lifted her high into the air.
Lily: I'm swimming, Daddy! Look at me!
Mark: You're doing amazing, sweetie! Look at you go!
From the patio table, Judge Harrison smiled as he took a sip of iced tea, watching his son-in-law and granddaughter play safely in the sunlight.
Judge Harrison: The lawyer called this morning, Mark. The annulment went through. The court stripped Evelyn of any legal association with your family, and her trial date is set for next month.
Mark: Good. She can spend the next decade thinking about what she did.
Judge Harrison: She tried to take everything from you—your money, your peace, your daughter. And in the end, she lost everything herself.
Mark: She thought I was weak because I was kind. She forgot that a father's love is the strongest thing on earth.
Lily: Daddy! Splash me!
Mark: Oh, you want a splash war? Here it comes!
Mark scooped up a wave of cool pool water, laughing as Lily giggled hysterically, splashing him back with all her tiny strength. The shadows of fear and betrayal that had once hung over their home had completely melted away under the bright Texas sun.
Mark: You know what, Lily?
Lily: What, Daddy?
Mark: As long as I'm breathing, nobody is ever going to hurt you again. This is our home, and we're going to be just fine.
Lily: I love you, Daddy.
Mark: I love you more than all the stars in the sky, baby girl.
Mark pulled his daughter into a tight, warm hug, holding her safe and secure above the water, where she belonged.
