Inside the warm living room, the paramedic finished wrapping a soft bandage around Lily’s swollen wrist. The toddler had finally stopped crying and was sipping warm cocoa while clutching her favorite stuffed bunny on the sofa.
Paramedic: She’s going to be okay, Mr. Vance. Mild bruising on her wrists, but no fractures or dislocations. The emotional shock is what needs care right now.
Mark: Thank you, doctor. I’ll make sure she gets all the support she needs.
The front door opened, and an older man in a tailored grey suit walked in, carrying a heavy leather briefcase. His face was etched with furious concern.
Judge Harrison: Mark! Where is she? Where is my granddaughter?
Mark: She's right here, Arthur. She's safe now.
Judge Harrison dropped his briefcase on the foyer table and immediately went down on one knee beside the couch, gently kissing Lily’s forehead.
Judge Harrison: Oh, my sweet girl... Grandfather is here. You're safe.
Lily: Grandpa! The bad lady tried to put me in the deep water, but Daddy hit her!
Judge Harrison: Your daddy did the right thing, sweetie. He took care of you.
The judge stood up, his eyes meeting Mark’s with a mixture of anger and deep gratitude.
Judge Harrison: The police chief called me directly on my private line. He told me what was on that video footage. If I had been here, Mark, I don't think I would have had your restraint.
Mark: I almost lost control, Arthur. If I hadn't stepped in when I did...
Judge Harrison: You saved her. That's all that matters. What about the fraud attempt?
Mark: She tried to move fifty grand out of the trust to a shell account in the Caymans. She thought she was clever.
Judge Harrison: I've already alerted the District Attorney's office. She’s being booked right now on felony child abuse, attempted grand larceny, and wire fraud. With her record, she won't see the outside of a prison cell for at least ten years.
Mark: I just can't believe I brought someone like that near my daughter. I failed her, Arthur.
Judge Harrison: Do not blame yourself. Predators like Evelyn know how to hide their true colors until they think they have total control. You caught her, you protected Lily, and you brought her down.
Mark: I was so focused on providing a complete family for Lily after Sarah passed... I ignored the subtle signs.
Judge Harrison: You were grieving, and you wanted what was best for your daughter. But look at her, Mark. She doesn't need a stepmother. She has a father who would tear the world apart to keep her safe.
