The humid Texas air felt suffocating, but the ice running through Mark’s veins had nothing to do with the summer heat. He sprinted past the glass sliding doors, his polished dress shoes skidding against the wet concrete surrounding the Dallas estate's swimming pool. The sight before him froze his lungs. His new wife, Evelyn, stood at the deepest end, her manicured hands wrapped tightly around the small arms of his three-year-old daughter, Lily. The baby was dangling directly over six feet of churning water, her tiny legs kicking wildly as red marks formed on her pale skin.
Lily: Daddy! Daddy, help me!
Evelyn: Shut up, you little brat! Stop squirming or I’ll let go right now!
Mark: Evelyn, don't you dare! Put her down right now!
Mark didn't hesitate. In one violent blur, he closed the distance between them, grabbed Evelyn by the shoulder, and pulled his terrified child into his arms. The sudden force spun Evelyn around, her heels slipping on the damp tiles. Before she could regain her balance, Mark snapped. His palm swung through the air, cracking against Evelyn’s cheek with a sound like a gunshot. She stumbled backward, landing hard onto a wicker lounge chair, her hand instinctively clutching her reddening skin in complete shock.
Evelyn: You... you hit me? Over this useless little creature?
Mark: Get away from my daughter! Call 911 right now!
Lily: Daddy, it hurts! My arms hurt!
Mark: I've got you, sweetheart. You're safe now. Daddy's right here.
Mark held the trembling toddler against his chest, feeling her tiny heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. But as he looked down at Lily’s wet, tear-stained face, he noticed a dark, purplish bruise on her wrist that hadn't come from today. A terrifying realization settled over him as Evelyn slowly stood up, a cold, venomous smile spreading across her lips despite the swelling on her face. This wasn't an isolated accident. It was the beginning of a nightmare he had unknowingly invited into his home.
