The grand hall of the Sterling estate was blinded by glittering crystal chandeliers and flooded with the city's most powerful billionaires. Servants in crisp white gloves passed around champagne flutes worth more than a worker's monthly rent. At the center of the marble floor stood eight-year-old Leo Sterling, looking lost in a beige designer suit that cost a fortune. Today was supposed to be the official announcement of his legal adoption into the Sterling empire, securing his future as heir to a multi-million-dollar trust fund.
Richard Sterling: Stand up straight, Leo. Everyone is looking at us. This is the day you officially become a Sterling.
Leo: My shoes hurt, Uncle Richard. And it's too loud in here.
Richard Sterling: Smile for the cameras. Millions of dollars in trust funds are riding on this presentation today.
Evelyn Sterling: Oh, look at him! Come here, darling! Come to your new family!
Victoria Sterling: Yes, sweetie, come here right now! We have so many gifts waiting for you!
Leo looked at the three wealthy Sterling women crouching in front of him, their sparkly diamond gowns shimmering under the chandelier light. They held out their arms, flashing rehearsed smiles for the photographers lining the room. But Leo’s eyes filled with tears, his chest heaving as tears streamed down his pale cheeks. He trembled, taking a small step backward away from the crowd.
Richard Sterling: Leo, stop backing away. Walk over to your aunts right now.
Leo: No... this is wrong!
Richard Sterling: Don't make a scene in front of the press!
Leo: THIS IS WRONG, MOMMY!
Without warning, Leo turned around and sprinted across the polished marble floor toward the back service doors. The crowd gasped as the boy ignored the multi-million-dollar family and ran directly toward a woman in a plain black maid dress and white apron holding a silver platter. The tray hit the floor with a loud metallic clatter as she dropped to her knees, opening her arms just in time to catch the sobbing boy in a tight embrace.
