David: Is she hurt? Elena, tell me right now, is Maya bleeding?
Elena: She’s breathing, sir. She’s in deep shock, but I caught her before her head hit the floor.
Maya: Mommy pushed me... Daddy, Mommy pushed me!
Veronica: Don't listen to her, David! She's four years old! She fell while trying to grab her toy!
Veronica scrambled up from the marble floor, her orange dress wrinkled and her hair disheveled. She pointed a trembling, manicured finger directly at Elena, her voice rising in pitch.
Veronica: The maid was distracted by her phone! She was supposed to be watching Maya! When she saw Maya slip, she tried to grab her and missed!
Elena: That is a complete lie! I was in the dining hall folding towels. I walked into the foyer and saw you stand behind her and deliberately push her over the railing!
Veronica: You insolent, penniless liar! How dare you accuse me of hurting my stepdaughter!
David: Quiet! Both of you, quiet right now!
David cradled Maya tightly in his arms, his body shaking with uncontainable rage and adrenaline. He looked at Elena, whose hands were still trembling uncontrollably as she checked the little girl's arms and legs for injuries.
David: Elena, you've worked for my family for three years. You've been like a mother to Maya since her biological mom passed away. Are you absolutely sure of what you saw?
Elena: On my mother’s soul, Mr. Vance. I saw Mrs. Vance look around, put both hands on Maya’s back, and shove her over the top rail. She didn't trip. She didn't fall.
Veronica: She’s trying to save her own job, David! She knows if you find out she was negligent, you'll fire her and report her! Who are you going to believe? Your wife or the domestic help?
David: I’m going to believe the truth, Veronica.
Veronica: I am the lady of this house! I brought wealth, social standing, and connections to your life when your real estate firm was failing! Why would I push a child?
Elena: Because of the trust fund. I heard you on the phone yesterday talking to your divorce lawyer.
Veronica’s face went completely pale, all the color draining from her cheeks in a fraction of a second. She stepped back, bumping into the bottom post of the staircase.
Veronica: You were eavesdropping on my private calls?
Elena: I was cleaning the study. You were screaming at someone named Marcus about the prenuptial agreement and how Maya’s inheritance from her biological mother was the only thing standing between you and nothing.
David: What is she talking about, Veronica?
Veronica: She’s making up stories! She’s crazy! David, look at me! I love Maya!
David: Do you? Because every single time I bring up Maya’s trust fund, you try to convince me to transfer control of the estate to your private account!
Veronica: That’s for financial planning! To protect our family from taxes!
David: My daughter almost died five minutes ago, Veronica! I don't give a damn about taxes!
Maya: Daddy, my back hurts... the lady pushed me real hard.
David looked down at his daughter, his eyes filling with tears of pure heartbreak and fury. He stood up, keeping Maya locked tightly against his chest, and glared at Veronica with utter disgust.
David: The police are coming. I called them from the car when Elena texted me that something felt wrong in the house earlier.
Veronica: You called the police on me?! Your own wife?!
David: You step away from my daughter right now. If you move one inch closer to her, I swear to God I won't hold back.
Veronica took two steps backward, her eyes darting toward the front door, realizing for the first time that the web of lies she had carefully constructed was beginning to unravel right in front of her.
