The Hidden Cameras

The Maid Saw Who Pushed the Little Girl

The distant sound of sirens echoed down the quiet suburban street of the wealthy Dallas neighborhood. Inside the mansion, the silence was heavy, interrupted only by Maya’s soft whimpers and the harsh sound of Veronica’s rapid breathing.

Veronica: David, please, let’s talk about this privately in the office. We don't need to involve the police in a family matter.

David: A family matter? You just tried to murder my four-year-old child!

Veronica: It was an accident! I was reaching out to catch her because she was leaning too far! Elena misunderstood what she saw from down here!

Elena: I didn't misunderstand anything, Mrs. Vance. I saw your face. You were smiling right before you shoved her.

Veronica: Shut up, Elena! You're a maid! You clean toilets for a living! Your word means nothing against mine in a court of law!

David: Her word saved my daughter’s life today. Yours is worthless.

Veronica: Think about the scandal, David! Think about your company! If news hits the press that your wife is being investigated for child endangerment, your real estate investors will pull out instantly! You’ll face foreclosure on this very mansion!

David: Let it burn. I’d rather live in a studio apartment with a safe daughter than live in a castle with a monster.

Veronica: You are making a massive mistake. I have the top defense attorneys in Texas on retainer. You have no proof! It’s her word against mine!

Elena stood up straight, brushing off her apron. She looked directly into Veronica’s frantic, desperate eyes and pulled a small black remote control out from her apron pocket.

Elena: We don't need just my word, Mrs. Vance.

Veronica: What is that? What are you holding?

Elena: Last month, after I noticed you treating Maya with cruelty whenever Mr. Vance was out of town, I spoke to Mr. Vance privately. We were both concerned about Maya’s safety.

David: I had a high-definition security system installed four weeks ago, Veronica. Hidden motion-sensor cameras in every single room and hallway.

Veronica’s eyes widened in sheer panic as she looked up toward the crown molding of the second-floor foyer ceiling. Hidden inside a small smoke detector casing was a tiny, flashing blue lens pointing directly at the balcony.

Veronica: You... you spied on me in my own home?

David: I protected my child from someone I was beginning to suspect didn't care about her at all.

Elena: The system streams directly to a cloud server and Mr. Vance’s phone. Every single second of what happened up on that balcony five minutes ago is recorded in crisp, clear 4K video audio included.

Veronica: No... no, David, wait! You don't understand!

David: I understand everything now. I understand why you insisted on updating my life insurance policy last week. I understand why you wanted sole custody rights if anything happened to me.

Veronica: Marcus forced me! My ex-fiance, Marcus! He had gambling debts, David! He threatened to ruin me if I didn't get access to Maya’s multi-million-dollar trust fund!

David: You tried to kill a child to pay off a gambler’s debt?!

Veronica: I panicked! I didn't know what else to do! Please, David, don't let them take me away!

The bright red and blue lights of three police cruisers flashed through the large stained-glass windows of the front entrance, illuminating the foyer in a harsh, cold glow as heavy footsteps hurried up the front steps.
