Uncovering the Scheme

The Maid Saw Who Pushed the Little Girl

Two weeks later, the atmosphere inside the Vance household was quiet, peaceful, and filled with a sense of healing. Sunbeams poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the foyer where a soft, plush rug now covered the cold marble floor below the balcony railing.

David sat in his private study with his lead corporate attorney, Mr. Harrison, reviewing a thick stack of legal documents and bank statements that had been recovered during the police investigation into Veronica’s past.

Mr. Harrison: The district attorney’s office has finalized the indictment, David. Veronica is facing charges of attempted first-degree murder, felony child abuse, and grand larceny fraud.

David: What did the financial audit uncover about her accounts?

Mr. Harrison: It’s worse than we thought. Before she married you, Veronica was nearly two million dollars in debt due to illegal offshore gambling syndicates managed by her associate, Marcus Vance no relation to you, of course.

David: She married me just to clear her debts...

Mr. Harrison: Exactly. When she realized your prenuptial agreement strictly protected your business assets and personal estate, she set her sights on Maya’s trust fund, which was established by Maya’s late mother. That trust was valued at five million dollars.

David: And under the original terms of the trust, if Maya passed away before turning eighteen, full control of the funds would transfer directly to the surviving stepmother if I were deemed incapacitated or unfit.

Mr. Harrison: Precisely. She was planning to eliminate the child, frame Elena for negligence, and then poison your reputation to take total control of the mortgage and estate funds. It was a cold, calculated execution plan.

David leaned back in his leather chair, rubbing his temples as a wave of intense emotion washed over him. The thought of how close he had come to losing his precious daughter made his hands shake.

David: If Elena hadn't been there... if she hadn't caught Maya...

Mr. Harrison: You would have lost everything, David. Your daughter, your sanity, and your livelihood. That young woman didn't just do her job that day. She risked her own physical safety to save your child.

A soft knock came at the open study door. Elena stood in the doorway holding a tray with fresh tea, wearing her clean, neat uniform. She smiled warmly as she saw David.

Elena: Excuse me, Mr. Vance. I brought you some tea. How is Maya doing in her playroom?

David: Elena, please, come in and sit down. Put the tray away. I need to speak with you.

Elena set the tray down on a side table and walked over, looking slightly nervous as she sat in the leather chair across from David’s desk.

Elena: Is everything alright, sir? Is there a problem with the police reports?

David: No, Elena. Everything is completely taken care of. Veronica will be going away for a very long time, and Marcus was arrested by federal agents at the border yesterday morning.

Elena: Thank God... Maya can finally grow up without feeling scared in her own home.

David: That brings me to what I want to discuss with you. Elena, what you did two weeks ago... no employee salary could ever repay the debt I owe you.

Elena: You don't owe me anything, Mr. Vance. I love Maya like my own family. I just did what any human being with a heart would do.

David picked up a thick legal document from his desk and slid it across the wooden surface toward Elena, along with an official pen.
