Elena: I got you! You're safe, sweet angel, I got you!
Elena pulled little Lily tight against her chest, her whole body shaking violently as the baby sobbed into her shoulder. The infant's heart was racing, beating fast against Elena's collarbone. Elena lay on the cold marble floor for a second, catching her breath, holding the little girl as if her own life depended on it.
Up on the tenth-floor balcony, Victoria stared down in absolute shock, her mouth open, hands trembling against the railing. She had not expected the maid to move so fast.
Victoria: You... you stupid girl! You were supposed to be in the kitchen!
Elena: How could you?! She's just a baby! She's an innocent child!
Victoria: Shut your mouth! You don't speak to me like that in my own house!
Elena: This isn't your house! And this baby is Arthur's daughter!
Before Victoria could respond, the heavy oak front doors flew open with a loud bang. Arthur Ashford rushed into the foyer, holding a leather briefcase, his tie loosened from a long day at the corporate office. He froze, his eyes widening as he saw Elena on the floor, cradling his daughter, while his wife stood panicked on the high balcony above.
Arthur: WHAT HAPPENED?! Why is Lily crying like that?!
Elena: Mr. Ashford! Thank God you're home!
Victoria: Arthur, darling! Don't listen to her! The maid dropped the baby! She's trying to blame me!
Elena: She's lying, sir! SHE THREW HER DOWN FROM THE TENTH FLOOR!
Arthur: What... what did you just say?!
Victoria: She's crazy, Arthur! She's a liar! I was trying to save her!
Elena: Look at the balcony railing, Mr. Ashford! Look at where her blanket is hanging! She pushed her right over the edge!
Arthur looked up at the railing, spotting the tiny yellow baby blanket snagged on the carved wood. His face went pale, then flushed with pure rage. The air in the room turned ice cold.
Arthur: Victoria... tell me she's lying.
Victoria: She's just a maid, Arthur! Who are you going to believe? Your wife or the help?!
Arthur: Stay right there. Don't you dare move a single inch.
Arthur dropped his briefcase onto the floor with a heavy thud and took off toward the grand staircase, taking three steps at a time.
