Arthur dropped his expensive leather briefcase onto the floor, the heavy thud echoing off the high ceilings of the foyer. His face was flushed red with absolute fury as he marched across the marble floor toward the bottom of the stairs. He looked back and forth between his crying daughter and Elena, who was still kneeling on the ground, shaking with fear and adrenaline.
Arthur: I pay you a generous salary to protect my daughter, not to endanger her life! How could you let go of her stroller near the top of the staircase?!
Elena: Mr. Vance, please! That isn’t what happened at all! I was down here in the hallway cleaning the wainscoting!
Victoria: Don't you lie to my husband, Elena! I saw you with my own eyes! You left the wheel lock off and walked away to check your phone!
Arthur: Is this true, Elena?! Were you distracted on your phone while my child was in danger?!
Elena: No, sir! I swear on my life! I wasn't even near the stairs when the stroller started moving! I ran as fast as I could to catch her!
Victoria: Oh, so now you’re accusing the stairs of pushing the stroller by themselves? Arthur, she’s trying to cover up her gross negligence because she knows she’ll be fired!
Arthur: Silence, both of you! I want to know how my daughter ended up plunging down a flight of marble steps!
Elena: Mr. Vance, I’m telling you the truth. I was down here. Mrs. Vance was the one standing at the top of the stairs right beside the stroller!
Victoria: How dare you! Arthur, are you going to let this maid slander your wife in your own house after she nearly killed your daughter?!
Arthur: Elena, you have five seconds to explain yourself before I call the police and have you dragged out of here in handcuffs for child endangerment!
Elena: Please, Mr. Vance! Look at the baby! Ask yourself why I would run from thirty feet away just to catch her if I was the one who left her up there!
Victoria: She’s just trying to save her job, darling. She knows she made a horrible mistake and now she’s trying to shift the blame onto me!
Arthur: I don't care about the excuses right now! Is Lily hurt?! Let me see her!
Arthur dropped to his knees right beside the stroller, his big hands trembling as he unbuckled the safety harness. Little Lily was shaking violently, her eyes red and filled with tears as she reached her small arms out toward her father.
Arthur: Shh, daddy’s here, baby girl. Daddy’s got you. Are you hurt anywhere?
Victoria: Bring her up here, Arthur. Let me hold her. She needs her mother right now to calm her down after that trauma.
Arthur: You stay up there for a second, Victoria. Let me check her arms and legs first to make sure nothing is broken.
Elena: Mr. Vance, please listen to me... the baby knows what happened. Look at her!
Arthur: Be quiet, Elena! I am talking to my daughter!
