Arthur gently lifted Lily out of the stroller, pressing her small, shivering body against his chest. He rubbed her back, whispering soothing words into her soft curly hair, trying to calm the wild panic that had seized the little girl. Victoria slowly walked down a few steps, her red silk dress rustling against the stone, her eyes fixed sharply on the child.
Victoria: Give her to me, Arthur. You know how sensitive she is. She needs to be held by someone she trusts after such a terrible accident.
Arthur: Hold on, Victoria. She’s still hyperventilating. Baby girl, look at daddy. Did you hit your head?
Elena: Mr. Vance, look at where she’s pointing!
Lily snuggled her wet face into Arthur’s neck, but then she suddenly pulled back, her tiny frame stiffening. She raised her right arm, pointing her small, chubby finger directly past her father’s shoulder, straight up toward Victoria on the stairs.
Lily: Papa stop! Mommy pushed me!
The entire foyer fell into an icy, suffocating silence. The ambient sound of the grand grandfather clock ticking in the corner seemed to amplify tenfold. Arthur froze completely, his hand stopping mid-stroke on his daughter’s back as the words echoed off the high marble walls.
Arthur: What... what did you just say, Lily?
Victoria: Oh, don't be ridiculous! She's one year old, Arthur! She doesn't even know what she’s saying right now! She’s scared and confused!
Lily: Mommy pushed! Mommy pushed stroller!
Elena: She’s telling you the truth, Mr. Vance! Children don't lie about something like that! I saw Mrs. Vance put her hands on the handles and shove it downward!
Victoria: Shut your mouth, you incompetent fool! Arthur, are you really going to take the words of a baby and a lying maid over your own wife?!
Arthur: Victoria... back up. Back up right now.
Victoria: What?! Arthur, look at me! I would never hurt our baby! Why would I ever push her down the stairs?! That’s insane!
Arthur: I said step back!
Arthur slowly stood up, holding Lily tightly against his shoulder with his left arm. His expression changed from confusion to a cold, terrifying rage. The blood drained from his face as he looked up at Victoria, who took a step backward, her mask of innocence beginning to crack.
Arthur: Lily has never used the word 'pushed' in her life until today. Where did she learn that word, Victoria?
Victoria: I don't know! Maybe from her cartoons! Maybe the maid taught her to say that to cover her own skin!
Elena: I would never use a child to save myself! Check the security cameras if you don't believe me!
Victoria: The cameras in the foyer have been broken since last week, as you well know, Elena!
Arthur: The main system was down, yes... but the nanny cam in the hallway ceiling wasn't, Victoria.
