The quiet afternoon inside the grand Dallas mansion was shattered by the awful, metallic clatter of wheels bouncing down marble steps. Elena froze in the hallway, her mop slipping from her trembling fingers as she saw the heavy black stroller tilting wildly over the top step. Inside it, tiny one-year-old Lily let out a terrified shriek as gravity pulled her downward into a nightmare.
Elena: Oh my God! No, no, no!
At the top of the grand staircase, Victoria stood in her flawless silk red dress, her arms still extended in a lingering push. Her face was completely cold, devoid of any panic or remorse. She did not scream, she did not rush forward, and she did not reach out to save the innocent child entrusted to her care. She simply watched the heavy stroller plunge down the steep flight of stairs like a spectator watching a scene in a movie.
Elena: I’ve got you! I’m coming, sweetie!
Elena sprinted across the polished marble floor, throwing her body forward with absolute desperation. The stroller crashed against the fourth step from the bottom, tipping dangerously onto two wheels. Elena lunged, catching the front bar with both hands just inches before the stroller could flip onto its side and slam the baby onto the hard stone floor.
Elena: I caught her! I caught her! It’s okay, baby, you’re safe!
Her heart hammered against her ribs as she fell to her knees, clutching the stroller tight against her chest. Sweat poured down her face as little Lily sobbed uncontrollably, her tiny fists clinging to her yellow blanket. Just then, the massive double front doors burst open, and Arthur stepped into the grand foyer, holding his briefcase.
Arthur: What on earth is going on here?! Why is the baby screaming?!
Victoria: Oh, thank Heaven you’re home, darling! Look what your careless maid almost did!
Arthur: You let my baby roll down the stairs?! Elena, are you insane?!
