Two police cruisers pulled into the circular driveway of the Dallas estate, red and blue lights flashing against the white marble pillars.
Officer Davis: Good evening, ladies. We received a 911 call regarding a child in danger. Who made the call?
Clara: I did, Officer! My name is Clara. My stepmother Beatrice threw my two-year-old daughter into the pool!
Officer Davis: Is the child hurt?
Clara: She's wrapped in a blanket inside, shivering hysterically! If Elena hadn't jumped in, Lily would be dead!
Beatrice suddenly wiped her eyes and let out a dramatic, sobbing gasp, dabbing her face with a silk handkerchief.
Beatrice: Oh, Officer! Thank God you're here! It's been a complete nightmare!
Officer Davis: Ma'am, please calm down. State your name and tell me what happened.
Beatrice: I am Beatrice Vance, owner of this property. My stepdaughter-in-law Clara has been going through severe psychiatric episodes ever since my stepson died.
Clara: What?! That is a complete lie!
Beatrice: Look at her, Officer! She's hysterical! She dropped her own baby near the pool during one of her postpartum panic attacks, and now she's blaming me!
Officer Davis: Is this true, ma'am?
Clara: No! I was upstairs in the nursery! I heard the splash and saw Beatrice standing over the water through the window!
Officer Davis: Ma'am, did anyone else witness the event directly?
Officer Davis turned to Elena, who was standing in soaking wet clothes near the pool edge.
Officer Davis: Miss, you're drenched. Did you see who put the child in the water?
Beatrice stepped closer to Elena, lowering her voice so the officers couldn't hear, but making her glare crystal clear.
Beatrice: Remember your work visa sponsorship, Elena. Remember who pays your mother's medical bills in Mexico.
Clara: Elena, tell them the truth! You saw her!
Elena swallowed hard, her body trembling under the wet uniform. She looked at Clara, then at Beatrice's icy, threatening eyes.
Elena: I... I was in the kitchen, Officer. I heard the splash and ran out. I jumped straight in to save Lily.
Officer Davis: So you didn't see who pushed the child?
Elena: I... I didn't see the exact moment she fell into the pool.
Beatrice: See, Officer? Elena was inside! Clara was alone near the pool with the baby!
Clara: Elena, why are you saying that?! You told me right after you pulled her out!
Beatrice: She's confusing things because she's unstable! Officer, I want her removed from my house immediately. She slapped me across the face just moments ago!
Beatrice pointed to the faint red mark on her cheek.
Officer Davis: Ma'am, did you strike Mrs. Vance?
Clara: Yes, I slapped her! She just tried to drown my daughter!
Officer Davis: Ma'am, without direct witnesses or physical evidence of abuse, I cannot arrest Mrs. Vance. However, assaulting someone is a serious offense.
Clara: You're going to take her side?! Look at my wet, freezing baby!
Officer Davis: I strongly suggest you spend the night at a hotel or relative's home, ma'am. Let cool heads prevail until family court reviews this situation.
Beatrice: That's right, Clara. Take your little girl and leave my estate. My lawyers will handle your eviction notice tomorrow morning.
Clara: You think you've won, Beatrice? This house belongs to the family trust!
Beatrice: The trust is managed by my board, Clara. You have no money, no witnesses, and no chance.
