The Dallas County Courthouse was packed with local reporters and high-profile lawyers. News of the feud over the fifty million dollar estate had leaked to the press, drawing intense public attention.
Beatrice sat at the defense table, wearing a crisp designer suit, diamond earrings, and an air of supreme confidence. Beside her sat three top corporate attorneys led by Mr. Sterling.
Clara sat at the opposite table with her humble family lawyer, Arthur Vance. Lily was in the courthouse nursery under court supervision during the hearing.
Judge Miller: We are here today to hear the emergency petition for sole custody of Lily Vance and the temporary management of the Vance Family Trust. Mr. Sterling, you may present your client's petition.
Mr. Sterling: Thank you, Your Honor. The evidence against Clara is overwhelming. As documented in the Dallas Police report, Clara experienced a severe emotional breakdown at the estate pool, putting her toddler in immediate life-threatening danger.
Judge Miller: And Mrs. Beatrice Vance took action to protect the child?
Mr. Sterling: Precisely, Your Honor. Beatrice attempted to calm her stepdaughter-in-law down, only to be violently assaulted by Clara in front of estate staff. We have submitted full medical affidavits proving Clara's severe postpartum depression.
Judge Miller: Mrs. Beatrice Vance, please step up to the witness stand.
Beatrice walked up gracefully, placing her hand on the Bible and swearing to tell the truth. She pulled out a white handkerchief and dabbed her dry eyes.
Beatrice: Your Honor, it breaks my heart to say this about my late stepson's wife, but Clara is simply unfit to raise Lily. She has been neglectful, volatile, and dangerous.
Judge Miller: Did you witness Clara put the toddler in the swimming pool, Mrs. Vance?
Beatrice: I did, Your Honor. I stood on the patio and watched in horror as Clara walked her poor little girl right to the deep end and dropped her in! I screamed for the housekeeper, Elena, to rescue the baby!
Judge Miller: So you never touched the child near the water yourself?
Beatrice: Never! I love little Lily like my own granddaughter! I would never hurt a hair on her head. I swear on my late stepson's memory that I only tried to save her!
Clara looked over at Arthur Vance and nodded gently. Arthur stood up from his chair.
Arthur: Your Honor, I would like to cross-examine the witness.
Judge Miller: Proceed, Mr. Vance.
Arthur: Mrs. Beatrice Vance, you are under oath. You state under penalty of perjury that you did not carry Lily to the pool, and that you did not push or throw her into the water?
Beatrice: I have already answered that question! I never touched her! Clara threw her in because she is mentally unstable!
Arthur: And you claim that all pool cameras were disabled at the time of the incident?
Beatrice: The security system was under maintenance, yes. There is no footage of the event.
Arthur: Your Honor, we would like to submit Exhibit A—a video file recorded on a hidden cloud camera installed on the estate grounds.
Beatrice's face instantly drained of color, her arrogant posture stiffening on the witness stand.
