Two hours later, the grand venue was completely empty. The flower arches were being taken down by workers, and the silence in the courtyard was peaceful.
Mark sat on a wooden bench in the garden, holding a cup of warm hot chocolate for Lily. Brenda sat next to them, holding a small pair of soft knit hats she had bought from a nearby shop.
Brenda: Here, Lily. Try this on. It has tiny bear ears on it.
Lily: Thank you, Miss Brenda... It’s warm.
Mark: You don't have to hide your head, sweetie. You look brave and beautiful no matter what.
Lily: Is the mean lady gone forever, Daddy?
Mark: She’s gone forever, baby. She will never come near you or our family again.
Brenda: Mark, I spoke to my lawyer. I handed over the full video file to the district attorney’s office just to be safe. Arthur Vance signed the full release of your sister’s trust fund twenty minutes ago. It's completely secured in your name now.
Mark: I can't thank you enough, Brenda. You put your own job on the line to stand up for my daughter.
Brenda: I couldn't live with myself if I stayed silent. Besides, I resigned from Arthur’s firm an hour ago. I'm opening my own family law practice next month.
Mark: If you need an investor, you know who to call. Sarah’s trust fund will help rebuild everything Clara tried to take from us.
Lily: Daddy, can we go get ice cream now? With extra sprinkles?
Mark: We can get all the ice cream you want, Lily. As much as you can eat.
Mark looked down at his daughter's smiling face, the fear finally gone from her eyes. He had lost a bride and a wedding today, but he had saved his daughter and secured her future forever.
As they walked out of the venue gates together into the bright Texas sunshine, Mark knew that dropping that diamond ring on the floor was the best decision he had ever made in his life.
