FABLE

The Lion Gate Opens

The Tattered Pendant and the Roman Arena

King Aurelius: What is that infernal glare? Guards, explain this at once!

Guard Captain: My Lord, the prisoner... something is shining around his neck!

King Aurelius: Idiots! It is merely a cheap trick! The beast will tear him apart regardless!

Caleb: Father, if your spirit is truly in this metal, let it protect me now.

The magnificent beast charged full speed across the open arena, its heavy muscles flexing with terrifying power. Every stride brought it closer to the solitary man standing motionless in the center ring. The crowd leaned over the stone railings, screaming in a chaotic mix of bloodlust and horror.

Spectator Woman: Cover the children's eyes! He's going to be shredded!

Spectator Man: Look at him! He isn't even trying to run or grab a sword!

Caleb: I don't need a sword. I have the truth on my side.

King Aurelius: Your truth means nothing in my arena, boy!

Guard Captain: Sire, look at the beast's eyes! Something is wrong!

The lion leaped through the air, claws extended and jaws open wide to crush its target. But just as its massive body peaked in mid-air, the golden medallion around Caleb's neck flared with the intensity of a dying star. The brilliant aura enveloped the entire central circle, radiating a strange, peaceful warmth that cut through the humid heat.

Caleb: Hold! In the name of the bloodline you once guarded!

King Aurelius: Kill him! Why is the beast hesitating?!

Spectator Man: My God... the lion stopped!

The giant white predator landed heavily on all four paws just inches from Caleb's chest. Instead of striking, the animal skidded in the sand, throwing up a dust cloud before coming to a complete halt. Its ears pulled back, and its ferocious growl softened into a low, questioning rumble.

Caleb: Easy, old friend. You remember this seal, don't you?

King Aurelius: Shoot him! Archers, draw your bows and shoot the boy right now!

Guard Captain: Your Highness, the light... our bows won't hold steady!

King Aurelius: I don't care about the light! Kill him before he speaks!
