FABLE

The Tattered Pendant and the Roman Arena

The scorching midday sun beat down relentless over the packed stone amphitheater. Sand glistened under the oppressive heat as thousands of voices roared in anticipation. Young Caleb stood near the center of the arena, his tattered shirt drenched in sweat and his feet buried in the dry dirt. High above in the royal balcony, King Aurelius stared down with cold, calculating eyes, surrounded by heavy stone pillars and golden banners standard to American pageantry.

King Aurelius: OPEN THE LION'S GATE!

Caleb: You will not break my spirit today, Aurelius!

King Aurelius: We shall see if your defiance survives the beast!

The ground shuddered as the heavy iron portcullis slowly ground upward. Dust cascaded from the dark threshold, revealing the massive silhouette lurking in the shadows. Caleb reached down with trembling hands to grasp the old brass medallion resting on his chest, feeling its rough edges as the crowd gasped in unison. A terrifying roar erupted from the shadows, shaking the very air in the arena.

Caleb: Stand fast... just stand fast.

Crowd Spectator: He doesn't stand a chance! Look at the size of that monster!

Guard Captain: Silence in the lower rings!

King Aurelius: Watch closely, my people. This is the fate of all who challenge the crown!

The giant white lion exploded from the dark tunnel, kicking up massive clouds of sand as its powerful paws pounded against the arena floor. The beast locked its golden eyes onto Caleb and unleashed a chest-rattling roar that echoed off the high stone walls. Caleb took a single deep breath, holding the lion-head pendant tight in his right palm. Suddenly, a blinding flash of divine light burst from between his fingers, casting long shadows across the sand and freezing the royal court in total shock.
