The Screen On The Wall

The Wealthy Stepmother Blamed The Housekeeper For Dropping The Newborn Heir

David: Chloe, stay back from that ledge! Go back to your bedroom this instant!

Chloe: No, Daddy! You can’t let them arrest Elena! She didn't drop Liam!

The little girl sprinted down the curved staircase, her face flushed red with tears as she ran directly between her father and the bleeding maid.

Victoria: Chloe, sweetheart, come away from there. That woman is dangerous and she’s going to prison.

Chloe: Don't touch me, Victoria! Don't you dare touch me!

Chloe slapped Victoria’s manicured hand away with surprising force, backing up against her father's legs.

David: Chloe! Apologize to Victoria right now! What has gotten into you?

Chloe: Look at the tablet, Dad! Just look at what Uncle Mark set up this morning!

Victoria's composed expression flickered for a fraction of a second, her lips tightening into a thin, pale wire.

Victoria: David, darling, the child is clearly hysterical from the commotion. Hand Liam to me so you can calm her down.

Chloe: No! Don't give Liam to her! Daddy, please look at the security cameras!

David: The estate cameras are offline, Chloe. The security contractor disconnected the internal servers for maintenance yesterday.

Chloe: They aren't offline! Uncle Mark came by at seven in the morning before you woke up!

David paused, his thumb hovering over the screen of his phone as he stared down at his daughter.

David: Mark was here today?

Chloe: Yes! He finished syncing the entire house system to the cloud! He put the master viewer app right here on my tablet so I could watch the pool outside!

Victoria stepped forward rapidly, reaching her hand out toward the tablet screen.

Victoria: Give that to me, Chloe. Little girls shouldn't be playing with estate security controls.

Chloe: Back off, Victoria!

David: Victoria, step back. Let me see the device.

David took the tablet from Chloe’s trembling fingers, his gaze narrowing as he saw the live four-camera split screen streaming in crystal-clear definition.

Elena: Please, Mr. Vance... just scrub the video back five minutes. Please look at the mezzanine camera.

Elena wiped the cold sweat from her brow, her apron stained with dust and blood from her split knees.

David: If this is a sick game to stall until the police get here—

Chloe: Camera three, Dad! Tap on camera three above the chandelier!

David pressed the square marked 'Mezzanine South' and dragged the timeline bar backward by precisely four minutes.

The screen flickered into crisp 4K playback, displaying the wide second-story landing overlooking the foyer.

On the ground level, Elena was clearly visible at the bottom of the frame, kneeling on a floor cushion with a bottle of polish and a rag, wiping the woodwork by the grandfather clock.

David: Wait... Elena was downstairs the entire time?

Victoria: The timestamp must be glitching, David. You know smart home apps lag when uploading to cloud networks!

Chloe: It’s not lagging! Look at the top hallway, Daddy! Look who comes out of Liam’s nursery!

David stared at the screen as the video continued to roll.

A figure wearing an expensive emerald-green silk robe walked out of the nursery doorway carrying the white swaddled bundle.

The woman on the second floor was not Elena.

It was Victoria.

David: Victoria... what were you doing carrying Liam out by the balcony railing?

Victoria: I was bringing him down to you, David! I heard a noise downstairs and stepped out to check!

Chloe: Keep watching, Dad! Watch her hands!

On the high-resolution feed, the woman in the green robe stopped directly against the carved wooden banister.

She did not trip. She did not stumble. Her feet remained firmly planted on the thick Persian runner.

She glanced over her shoulder toward David’s closed study door, checked the empty hallway behind her, and looked directly down into the empty foyer.

Then, with deliberate, slow precision, Victoria lifted the three-month-old infant completely over the wooden banister.

She extended her arms straight out over the twenty-foot drop.

And then she unclenched her fingers.

The white bundle tumbled downward into the open air.

Below, Elena heard the sudden rush of air, dropped her cloth, and threw her entire body forward in a desperate dive across the stone floor, catching the baby inches from disaster.

A suffocating silence crashed over the foyer, thick enough to choke the breath from David’s lungs.
