The Confession On The Stairs

The Wealthy Stepmother Blamed The Housekeeper For Dropping The Newborn Heir

David: You... you let him go.

David’s voice came out in a ragged, hollow rasp, the tablet almost slipping from his frozen hands.

Victoria: David, no! It's a optical illusion! Those wide-angle security lenses warp perspective!

David: You pushed your arms out over the railing and opened your hands!

David spun around to face her, his eyes wild with a mixture of disbelief, nausea, and terrifying rage.

Victoria: I had a sudden spasm in my wrists! My hands cramped up! It was a terrible accident!

Chloe: You didn't cramp up! You looked down to see if Elena was under you, and then you smiled when you let go!

Victoria: Shut your mouth, you filthy little liar!

Victoria lunged forward with her hand raised, her teeth bared in pure venom as she aimed a vicious strike at Chloe’s face.

Before her palm could connect, David grabbed Victoria’s wrist in mid-air, squeezing with enough force to turn her fingers white.

David: Don't you ever raise a hand to my daughter in this house.

Victoria: Let go of me! David, you're breaking my bones!

David: Why did you do it, Victoria? Tell me right now before I lose what little control I have left!

Victoria tried to pull back, but David’s grip remained an iron vise, pinning her against the bottom banister post.

Victoria: You want the truth?! You really want to hear it in front of the servants?!

Elena: I have cared for this home for six years, Mrs. Vance. I cleaned your messes while you went shopping in New York.

Victoria: You’re a maid! You are nothing! You clean toilets for a living!

David: Answer my question! Why would you throw my baby over a balcony?!

Victoria: Because he isn't mine!

The words tore out of Victoria’s throat like acid, echoing off the high cathedral ceilings of the mansion.

David stood motionless, the blood draining completely from his face.

Victoria: He has Sarah's blood in his veins! Sarah's frozen embryo, Sarah's eyes, Sarah's sickening legacy!

David: You knew we used Sarah's embryos with a surrogate before we ever got married! You agreed to raise him!

Victoria: I agreed to marry a billionaire, David! Not live in a mausoleum dedicated to your dead wife!

Elena: Sarah was an angel who treated everyone with respect. You aren't worthy to walk in her shoes.

Victoria: Shut up! Shut your mouth, Elena!

Victoria turned her burning glare back onto David, her perfectly styled hair falling loose around her flushed face.

Victoria: Your high-priced estate attorney had me sign a prenuptial agreement that leaves me practically penniless if we separate without a child of my own!

David: That prenup was drafted to protect Chloe and Liam's future inheritance!

Victoria: It protects everything for them and leaves crumbs for me! If Liam died because of Elena’s gross negligence, the surrogate trust fund would have defaulted back to the main marital estate!

David: You planned to kill an innocent three-month-old child... just to unlock more trust money?

Victoria: The world would have mourned with us! We would have grieved, we would have fired the maid, and then we would have had our own biological baby to inherit your entire logistics empire!

David looked at the woman he had married eight months ago and felt a wave of pure revulsion rise in his throat.

David: You aren't human. You are a cold, calculated monster.

Victoria: I am a realist, David! And if you think you can ruin my life over this, you're dead wrong.

From the long, winding private driveway outside, the sharp, wailing pitch of police sirens sliced through the afternoon air.
