Chief Miller stepped across the threshold, followed immediately by two armed patrol officers with their hands resting on their utility belts.
Chief Miller: David! We got here as fast as the sirens could carry us. Where is the baby? Is Liam hurt?
David: Liam is right here, Miller. He's unharmed, thanks to Elena’s fast reflexes.
Victoria immediately threw her hands up to her face, bursting into loud, theatrical sobs as she stumbled toward the officers.
Victoria: Chief Miller! Oh thank God you’re here! David has completely lost his mind! He attacked me!
Chief Miller stopped, his sharp, experienced eyes darting from Victoria’s pristine clothes to Elena’s bleeding knees and torn apron.
Chief Miller: Ma'am, please step back against the staircase wall and keep your hands visible.
Victoria: You need to arrest that maid right now! She dropped my baby from the mezzanine! David is having a breakdown and trying to cover for her because they’re sleeping together!
Elena: That is a disgusting lie, Mrs. Vance!
Chief Miller: Enough shouting! David, what happened here? Your initial call reported an attempted homicide.
David: It was an attempted homicide, Miller. But I was mistaken about who was holding the baby.
David handed the tablet directly to Chief Miller, pointing to the paused video frame on the screen.
David: Tap play. This is our cloud-recorded mezzanine feed from eight minutes ago.
Chief Miller took the tablet, his brow furrowing as the two officers behind him leaned over his shoulder to watch.
The silence in the grand foyer was absolute, broken only by the quiet cooing of baby Liam and the muffled ticking of the grandfather clock.
Chief Miller watched the screen intently. He saw Victoria walk out onto the mezzanine holding the child.
He saw her look over the railing, check behind her, extend both arms fully into the open space, and drop the child.
He watched Elena throw herself horizontally across the lower floor to snatch the infant out of the air.
Chief Miller slowly lifted his eyes from the screen, his face hardening like concrete.
Chief Miller: Sweet Jesus Christ in heaven.
Victoria: It was a cramp, Miller! You know my father! My father was Judge Harrington! He appointed you to the county board!
Chief Miller: I don't give a damn if your father was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Victoria.
Chief Miller turned his head toward the two officers standing behind him.
Chief Miller: Handcuff her. Attempted first-degree murder, felony child endangerment, and filing a false police report.
Deputy Kowalski: Turn around, ma'am. Put your hands behind your back right now.
Victoria: Don't touch me! Get your filthy hands off my clothes! David, tell them to stop!
The deputy grabbed Victoria’s arms, twisting them behind her back with swift, practiced motion.
The metallic snap of the steel handcuffs echoed loudly against the marble walls.
Victoria: David! You can't let them take me to a public jail! Think about what this will do to our family reputation!
David: You stopped being my family the moment you let go of my son.
Victoria: I’ll sue you! I’ll take every penny in your offshore accounts! I’ll have the best lawyers in this country tear your estate apart!
David: Richard Sterling will have your bail denied before midnight. You won't see a dime, Victoria. Not a single cent.
The deputies dragged the screaming, cursing woman out the heavy front doors, her silk robe trailing across the gravel as they shoved her into the back of the cruiser.
The heavy car doors slammed shut, and the wailing sirens began to fade down the country road.
David stood in the quiet foyer, his shoulders sagging under an immense weight as he looked at Elena’s battered knees.
David: Elena... I almost ruined your life. I almost had an innocent woman thrown into a cage.
Elena: You were terrified for your son, Mr. Vance. Any loving father would have panicked in that moment.
David: That doesn't excuse my blindness. You dove onto hard stone to save Liam. You saved this entire family.
David knelt down on the marble, wrapping one arm around his daughter Chloe and reaching out to gently hold Elena’s bruised hand.
Chloe: Elena is our family now, right Dad?
David: Yes, Chloe. Elena is never leaving us again.
