The sweltering afternoon heat of Dallas beat heavily against the glass dome of the Miller estate, but inside the sprawling mansion, a freezing silence had settled. High above the polished white marble foyer, on the second-floor balcony railing, stood Evelyn, her face twisted in rage. Dangling precariously over the drop was three-year-old Lily, her tiny hands clutching air as her terrified whimpers echoed through the grand house.
Evelyn: LOOK WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DISOBEY ME!
Elena: NO, PLEASE! DON'T HURT THE BABY! HAVE MERCY!
Elena, the young live-in maid whose uniform was stained with sweat, dropped to her knees on the cold marble floor. Her hands were clasped in desperate prayer, tears streaming freely down her face as she looked up at the heartless woman who held a innocent life in her hands.
Evelyn: She is a reminder of his past, and I am sick of looking at her!
Elena: Take it out on me! Please, Mrs. Miller, just step back from the edge!
Evelyn: Too late!
With a chilling grin, Evelyn let go of the toddler. Time seemed to stop as the baby fell through the open air of the foyer. Elena didn't hesitate. Sprinting across the slick, slippery floor, she launched her body forward, throwing her arms out just as the child plummeted toward the ground. The impact knocked the breath out of Elena, but she pulled the sobbing baby tight against her chest, wrapping her body around the girl to cushion the fall.
Elena: Shh... I've got you, sweetheart. You're safe. I've got you.
Before Evelyn could react on the stairs above, the grand double doors of the mansion burst open. Arthur Miller, the wealthy real estate developer and father of the child, stepped into the foyer, his briefcase dropping from his hands as he took in the horrifying scene. The sight of his maid clutching his crying daughter on the floor and his wife trembling on the balcony stairs shattered the quiet afternoon forever.
